Why Should You Eat Organically Grown Food?

I could be opening a big can of worms but we gotta talk about this. Organically grown food should be part of a good gout diet and is a huge controversy and that’s a good thing. Why are they such a controversy? One guess: someone’s losing money.

Some folks say they’re no better or safer than “conventionally” grown food but what does that mean? My question is; how did using genetically modified food, synthetic chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, and antibiotics get to be “conventional”?

No matter – I’m going to let you run down whatever road you want to with that one, I’ve got another point about organically grown food that I want to make.

Personally I try to avoid weird chemicals in whatever form, in whatever way. They’re all just another way we take on more free radical damage.

Do a search on “organically grown food” and draw your own conclusions. I did and found all kinds of interesting stuff including this little tidbit from the ScienceDirect:

  • Another study looked at the amount of flavonoids found in organic and conventional foods. Flavonoids are micronutrients found in food which play important roles in preventing cancer and heart disease. It was found that the highest levels of flavonoids were found in foods grown by a method called sustainable farming.

I’m very interested in flavonoids…and sustainable farming.

Anyway, this is where I’m going with this; organic or conventional, how do we know how much ORAC value and milligrams of flavonoids we’re getting?  Short story. A couple years ago we were getting our fresh vegetables from a local CSA. (Community Supported Agriculture) I was astounded by how much better the lettuce (among other things) tasted! And even more astounded by how long it lasted! We bought really good, organically grown lettuce at the local health food market but it didn’t taste nearly as good or last a fraction as long.

Thank you Bert, I’ve come a long way. You helped a lot. I was a little goofy there for a while and had a number of physical problems. But gout hasn’t been one of them. Which Brings Me To My Point:

How much nutritive value, ORAC, flavonoid-power, etc., do foods lose from the time they’re picked to the time we eat them? Then we cook the hell out of them and burn all the good stuff out of what’s left!
