Which Is It?
Are “foods” high in uric acid what bring on gout…or are foods that are “high in purines” what cause gout? The answer is: High purine foods. Lots of folks think that foods are high in uric acid. That misconception has become synonymous with high purine foods. Let’s have a closer look at why that is.
Purines are found in all the cells of a human body and in all plants. Uric acid is formed when purines have been broken down. It’s a normal and natural antioxidant that helps protect us from free radical damage.
You and I start howling with pain when too much uric acid accumulates and crystallizes in one of our joints. This ladies and gentlemen, is gout, and why a low purine diet is thought to be a good idea.
This is all explained nicely without all the medical mumbo-jumbo in The World’s Healthiest Foods -check it out:
- “Purines are natural substances found in all of the body’s cells, and in virtually all foods. Purines provide part of the chemical structure of our genes and the genes of plants and animals.”
They also list out many high purine foods to avoid, as well as which one’s are ok. How many milligrams of high purine foods to eat or not eat is what you’ve heard about for years. You will find that information on many other sites about gout. They basically outline for you how to make a career out of avoiding gout. But the good news is…
It’s Your Lucky Day…I’m Not Going To Do That!
You should know what those foods are and be aware of them but, come on, who eats liver anyway? And what the heck are sweetbreads? Lobster and asparagus are more like it…and sometimes they’re worth getting a gout attack for…just kidding. We’re going to go deeper into the what, how much, and when.
For now, don’t freak out too much on which are foods high in uric acid or which ones have a lot of purines in them – just keep thinking about the easiest and tastiest way to get the most flavonoids- you know, real foods, live foods, foods that still have plenty of water and moisture in them. Just to quickly address what to eat and what to not eat, the easiest rule of thumb is this: avoid anything that comes in box, bag, can, or a bottle.
Anything that you get that way has been processed…i.e., changed from it original, natural, delicious, healthy form. Processed foods or fast foods all have an inordinate amount of added chemicals to boost shelf-life and flavor and the worst thing about them is all the added synthetic sugars like high fructose corn syrup – which has totally been linked to foods high in uric acid and causing gout.

What Should You Really Be Worried About?
Watching what you eat in relationship to your struggles with gout is certainly part of the process. BUT, it’s not everything. What you do to get control of gout is same things you do to improve and strengthen your health in the first place – simple as that.
So what do you do or what have you done in the past to “get healthy”? As well as eating more fresh clean food that you’ve prepared and cooked yourself, you started exercising more, getting to bed earlier, did things to calm your mind, started breathing deeper and drinking more water.
Gout is not a food allergy – meaning it’s not one of those things that EVERY time you eat a certain thing – BAM! – you’re screwed. Sometimes you might get a gout attack and it seems like it happened that way but it’s more like sometimes you eat a steak, or some scallops, or drink too much and it comes on with a vengeance! But what’s really happening is that your internal environment has become overly acidic in way to many ways and now your kidneys are struggling to deal with yet one more acidic substance – the uric acid.
Let’s finish this one up: gout is the least of your problems – it’s the diabetes, heart disease, strokes, and cancer that you’re getting yourself all teed-up for – gout is the easy part.
☆ Don’t worry so much about foods high in uric acid – EAT REAL FOOD!
“I know your pain. Let me help you kill your gout for good! And teach you to advocate for yourself and take ownership of your gout recovery, by showing you how to live the gout-free lifestyle.” Two decades ago, Bert Middleton found himself diagnosed with gout. Like 8.3 million other people in the United States (approximately 4% of the population), he struggled helplessly with the physical, emotional, social, and financial impact that gout left unchecked can have on your life. Prescription drugs were of limited help… And the terrible pain of regular gout attacks left him unable to enjoy even the simplest daily pleasures. His marriage was suffering. His finances were spiraling due to the impact gout had on his ability to work. And maintaining a social life was often nearly impossible. Tophi surgeries left him in terrible pain. And he found himself depressed … and angry … that gout was stealing years of his life.
Until one day, after hundreds of hours of research and self-experimentation, Bert finally had a breakthrough and created a blueprint for a way of living that would prove to be “the answer” to living gout-free for nearly a decade now. Today, Bert and his “Gout Wife” Sharon devote their evenings and weekends to educating other gout sufferers on how to live the gout-free lifestyle. Showing others his 911 Emergency Response Gout Recovery Plan for getting PAINFUL gout attacks under control in as little as 4 hours. And then, how to make daily choices that keep gout under control for GOOD! So you can finally start LIVING again!
