Cause of Death: Gout

  • Can Gout Kill You, Gout and Mortality, Gout Death

I’ve been waiting to write this post for a while now. It’s a very serious and sad story about what gout really is.

+TerryOne morning, a couple of months ago in August, I got a very sobering phone call out of the blue. I get phone calls everyday from people struggling with gout but not like this one. Through sobs and tears, a woman’s voice asked, “Is This Bert?” I said “yes” and it took what seemed to be an eternity for her to compose herself and I wasn’t sure what to make of it all.

+KerryFinally she was able to introduce herself and she was calling to tell me her twin brother had been battling advanced tophaceous gout for the last few years, and was about to give up. His name was Terry and hers is Kerry. I wanted to do whatever I could to help and offered to talk to Terry if it was possible.

Terry and I talked about an hour later and he related his unbelievably difficult journey of gout with me. I said we would need to talk everyday to start to unravel and undo the ravages he’d experienced. We agreed to talk everyday at noon – but that was the one and only time I got to talk to him.

Here is Terry’s gout story as recounted by his loving sister Kerry:

Terry’s Gout Story

My twin brother suffered his first gout attack when he was 27 years old. He had little bouts of it off and on until he turned 40, then all hell broke lose! His stress level skyrocketed, due to a miserable marriage, he started drinking heavier and certainly loved his red meats. Next thing he knows, he is having tophi develop in his hands, feet, knees and elbows. He received treatment, but the Doc that he went to put him on the wrong dosages of Allopurinol and Colchicine, which caused his gout to flourish and damage to his gallbladder occurred. He had his gallbladder removed in 2011 of which caused more problems. The next thing we found, was that the tophi attacked his vital organs and he ended up passing away from kidney, liver and pancreas failure, in September of 2013. Terry suffered horribly and the only consolation I am finding in his death is the fact that he is no longer feeling the pains and disfigurement of this horrible disease called Gout!

Thank you Bert.

What you are doing means so much to me. I have difficulty expressing, in words, how much I feel your thoughts and efforts change the world.  We are gout fighting warriors!!

Thank you brother!

Sincerely,

Jon

. . .

I Used To Say:
“I’ve Had Gout Worse Than Anyone
I’ve Ever Met”

+tophi-elbow1As you can see from the pictures, this is gout at its worst. I had tophi removed from four fingers on my right hand, two on my left, and one of my toes on my right foot . . . but NOTHING like this.

This was obviously a very difficult time for Kerry as well as Terry. I talked and texted often with Kerry through those last weeks of Terry’s life. A day or so after the one and only time I got to talk to Terry, he was soon in the hospital and it took about 10 days before he succumbed.

+tophi-hand3Kerry was very generous to write the story of Terry’s battle and let me create this post around it. She did so to help bring awareness to all of those struggling with gout that this is indeed nothing to fool around with. Can gout kill you? Yes it can. But it tortures you relentlessly before it does.

The picture of Terry at the top of the page is from only about 10 years ago; he was strong and healthy and loved to pan for gold. As the gout advanced, it brought with it not only pain but depression. Those complications lead to Terry losing his job as an electrician, his wife and family, his house, and finally his life. We all need to realize that this could happen to any of us if we don’t make a serious effort toward gout prevention.

+tophi-foot3Terry was on the typical gout drugs allopurinol and colchicine and later a pro bono course of Krystexxa that did not work. Please don’t rely on drugs to correct your gout.

In Closing

I would like to end this post with thanks and gratitude to Kerry for her unfailing love and devotion to her brother. She was there for him every step of the way to the very end – Thank you for being there Kerry.

Bert Middleton, The Original Gout Killer

“I know your pain.  Let me help you kill your gout for good!  And teach you to advocate for yourself and take ownership of your gout recovery, by showing you how to live the gout-free lifestyle.”

Two decades ago, Bert Middleton found himself diagnosed with gout.   Like 8.3 million other people in the United States (approximately 4% of the population), he struggled helplessly with the physical, emotional, social, and financial impact that gout left unchecked can have on your life.

Prescription drugs were of limited help…

And the terrible pain of regular gout attacks left him unable to enjoy even the simplest daily pleasures.  His marriage was suffering.  His finances were spiraling due to the impact gout had on his ability to work. And maintaining a social life was often nearly impossible.

Tophi surgeries left him in terrible pain.  And he found himself depressed … and angry … that gout was stealing years of his life.

Until one day, after hundreds of hours of research and self-experimentation, Bert finally had a breakthrough and created a blueprint for a way of living that would prove to be “the answer” to living gout-free for nearly a decade now.

Today, Bert and his “Gout Wife” Sharon devote their evenings and weekends to educating other gout sufferers on how to live the gout-free lifestyle via their website TheGoutKiller.com

Showing others his 911 Emergency Response Gout Recovery Plan for getting PAINFUL gout attacks under control in as little as 4 hours.

And then, how to make daily choices that keep gout under control for GOOD!

So you can finally start LIVING again!

Wow, Keren, sounds rough. Definitely soda and stress are not good for gout. Go to my contact page and email me and we can try to figure out what will work for you.

I am suffering gout for 11 years now. My gout stopped attacking my right foot since last year until my new doctor prescribed a new medicine on me called Febuxostat. Now, i am suffering gout for a week and it is paining and swelling on and off. I told my doctor about it but she insisted me to still take the said medicine. I need your advice as soon as possible. Thanks.

@Jomer: Sorry for the slow reply. While I don't think drugs are the answer, they are certainly a resource to take advantage of...if they work. Febuxostat is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor and that is the same as allopurinol. It can actually cause gout to get worse before it gets better. Use the Search Box at the top of my sidebar and search for my "Allopurinol" page - that explains how it works and why it can cause gout attacks. Otherwise, I would be happy to help in any way I can - use my contact form and email me. Thanks.

I've had gout attacks for years, but have kept it moderately under control. One night laying in bed I found myself not being able to move any part of my body without pain. I had to call 911 to be taken to the hospital. They never did tell me the problem. Could this have been a "full body" gout attack?

Yikes! That would be the first time I've ever heard of "full body gout" Robert. Sounds more like a neurological seizure or Bells Palsy of something like that. Odd they didn't give you anything to go on. Let me know how I can help. Thanks.

I've been battling gout since I was 23 , I'm 33 now. After years of just waking up and not being able to walk for 3 day , my Dr finally checked my blood work for uric acid and it was a 15.5 level. I don't like chicken or much fish , I only eat red meat. I've since cut back on my intake of red meat and it seems to still be getting worse every years. It bothers me that my kids can't have a active dad to play with all the time.

Josh, that is a rough story. 15.5 is nothing to mess around with. You could easily end up like Terry in this post in another 10 years. Go to my testimonials page and read some of what people have said. I don't want this to turn into a commercial but you need my video program, maybe even more. There are plenty of us out there that too advantage of the gout drugs and then cleaned up our acts and weaned ourselves off of them. The biggest problem with the gout drugs is that they cover up the symptoms and people just continue to do the same old things that brought on the gout in the first place. If you buy the ebook first then the video program is cheaper. Go to my contact page and email or call. You are in a serious bad way. Thanks.

Hello Tracy, what is he willing to do to keep this from happening again? Ultimately, being gout free starts with the DECISION to be gout free. Contact me and maybe I can make some suggestions that will help point your husband in a better direction.

Hello Ruth, It sounds like your friend has a very advanced case of gout and is under a doctor's care - I would not want to get in the middle of that. Also, by the sound of it, he has multiple health conditions that are also going on in conjunction with the gout - like diabetes and heart disease. All those degenerative disease's go somewhat hand-in-hand. The best thing for him to do and for you to help him, is to help him be his doctor's best patient and be very compliant. That is the best thing I can tell you.

Hello Patrick, If your UA is so low, why do you think these are gout symptoms? Did the doctor say these are gout symptoms? There are over 4000 documented types of arthritis, so maybe this is something else. Do a search on "sesamoid bone" - the small bones in our feet go through many different kinds of stain.

Yes and no - while gout and pseudogout are the difference between uric acid and calcium, they both stem from a problem of mineral imbalance. The use and appropriation of calcium depends on many other factors, some of which are the same factors that contribute to bringing on gout. Generally speaking, all of the same health improving efforts I outline in my video program to help prevent gout, will also help restore balance and will most likely change your relationship with pseudogout. Hope that helps - here's a link to get you started: https://www.thegoutkiller.com/what-is-gout/what-does-gout-look-like/pseudogout/

Thanks for taking the time to lay all that out there Damien - always hard for me to hear stories like yours. We've all been programmed and conditioned to think health comes from pills but the reality is, we start on the pills after things have gone wrong. It takes cleaning your diet and how you go about living to really make permanent change. There are so many factors to monitor and rotate - we have to adjust and adapt continuously. Of course that is what we all have to do all the time, gout or no gout. Check out my latest post - there is emerging research that is showing that chronic high insulin is a major contributor to creating the condition of gout: https://www.thegoutkiller.com/blog/gout-causes/can-insulin-cause-gout/ Keep up the good fight and let me know how I can help!

Can the use of methamphetamine cause gout? My gout is progressing so rapidly. Top of toes, elbows and hands. I'm pretty freaked out at how fast my fingers are getting hard lumps on them and going crooked.

Hi Toni, I don't know anything about meth other than it's a street drug and it is some weird chemical that, although it gets you high somehow, it is a toxic substance that requires a massive amount of nutritional resources to eliminate from the body. So, by definition, it's probably causing a major disruption to your biochemcical balance and that is a recipe for gout attacks and a long term problem with gout. So the short answer is stop taking it. Thanks!

Bobby, if the joint (typically the big toe) is red, hot, and shiny...and you are having thoughts of chopping your foot off to relieve yourself of the pain...it's gout. But, the best way to know for sure, is to go to a blood work lab like Quest Diagnostics, (where you can self-pay without some kind of blood work order from a doctor) and have your blood uric acid tested. If it's elevated, you've got gout. Normal is below 6.0 mg/dl. May The Force Be With You...
