Even though I haven’t had a gout attack in over 10 years, I still remember my worst attack and how painful it was. The more reason I want to do what I can to let you and everyone else know that there are alternatives to the pain, and if we stay on it, we can minimize the drugs and eventually eliminate them altogether.

Here is a list of the most effective natural treatments and supplements I’ve used for quick gout pain relief.

2. Tart Cherry

The effectiveness of tart cherry for gout has finally received the recognition it deserves. It’s not that difficult to explain why cherries for gout work so well. In an elementary way, they help decrease blood uric acid levels tremendously according to studies documented by ScienceDaily. Multiple studies, such as this study from 2016 and this study from 2012 conclude tart cherry is a successful home remedy for many and it also may work to prevent gout attacks.

During a gout attack, taking 2400 mg of pure tart cherry and drinking 64 oz of good, clean, filtered water daily until the attack subsides is what always helped me the most.

For preventative measures, in addition to staying properly hydrated, taking 1200 mg of pure tart cherry is a good preventative daily dose. Tart cherry capsules are a more convenient and portable option compared to tart cherry juice. Especially since tart cherry juice is high in sugar.

There are a few different brands that provide high-quality tart cherry that work well, but I’ve always had the most success with these capsules.

3. Celery Seed Extract

Celery is quite possibly the perfect gout-fighting food. It acts as an anti-inflammatory, helping stop the pain of gout attacks. It is a diuretic, promoting the excretion of uric acid through urine. It helps manage uric acid by acting as an xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitor, and it is highly alkalizing, which helps reduce uric acid buildup.

The medicinal qualities of celery are found in the fresh stalks, but are more potent in celery seeds. I recommend eating 4-8 stalks of fresh celery daily (if possible) and also taking 1-2 celery seed extract pills each day.

The pills provide a more potent concentration of the gout-fighting medicinal compounds, and their convenience helps you take in a consistent amount.

4. Alkalizing Diet & (Avoid Purine-Rich Foods/Drinks!)

Foods and drinks that are alkalizing or alkaline-forming are one of the best treatments. Fresh fruits and vegetables are typically strong antioxidants and valuable for raising the pH of the body chemistry to a healthier alkaline level.

Examples of Alkaline foods to be consumed include: Water, which can be made alkaline if run through an alkalizing kitchen water filter. Almost all vegetables, especially dark leafy greens. Some grains are alkaline, including amaranth, quinoa, millet, and kasha. Whole, real salts – like Celtic, Himalayan, and Real Sea Salt. Some fruits – like lemons, limes and sour cherries.

High-quality ionized alkaline water is the best thing to drink! Also, during an active gout flare make sure to avoid high purine foods and drinks such as red meat, organ meats, most seafood, alcohol, and sugary drinks. If you want to have control OVER your gout, rather than being at it’s mercy, spend a few minutes learning why and how the best gout diet will always minimize your purine intake.

5. Epsom Salt Soaks

Soaking the affected joint in warm water and Epsom salts is directly alkalizing in a “localized” way for the gout-ravaged joint.

Epsom salts are very alkaline, and will penetrate the skin to get inside the body helping to dissolve the uric acid crystals.  Soak your affected joint for 20 minutes in an Epsom Salt bath that is warm, not hot.

After the bath, apply an ice pack for 20 minutes. The ice should be wrapped in a towel so that it is not in direct contact with your skin.  The ice will help reduce the inflammation that is causing the swelling.

The alternation between hot and cold will increase the blood flow to the area, helping to move the blood and lymph in and out of the joint which will help end the attack.

6. High Doses of Vitamin C

The two most significant reasons why most people take vitamin C are for how it helps in fighting the common cold, and for its effectiveness in preventing scurvy. (symptoms include lethargy, shortness of breath, bone pain, easy bruising, gum disease, and emotional changes)

Studies have shown specifically that vitamin C helps in reducing uric acid, which helps to prevent gout attacks by keeping the immune system strong. Additionally, vitamin C helps keep the liver and kidneys working well, the cardiovascular and lymph systems free of excess toxins, which all adds up to maintaining the kind of strong health that does not allow gout to occur.

Any high dose of Vitamin C will work but here is what I use.

7. Rest, Reduce Stress, and Recover!

It is important to rest. Try to elevate and ice the affected joint several times per day. This can help reduce swelling and pain.

Try to avoid stress as excessive stress can worsen your gout attack. If possible, I recommend that you clear your schedule for the next 24 hours…  

If you can’t that’s okay, but if you can afford the time away get some rest and relax it will help you recover.
